On this epsisode of the Brewer to Brewer Podcast Matt Gallagher of Suncatcher Brewing interviews Van Havig of Gigantic Brewing Company. They discuss their extensive brewing careers and Havig shares his early experiences at Rock Bottom Brewery, highlighting the importance of traditional brewing methods and the impact of modern trends.
He emphasizes Gigantic Brewing’s commitment to using whole leaf hops and traditional processes but also the evolution of beer styles, the challenges of maintaining identity in a rapidly changing industry, and the significance of brewing as a profession. He’s not shy about his thoughts on the American beer revolution and the industry’s global influence.
“I always tell people I took German in high school, and I always tell people that that there’s this German phrase ‘Arbeit macht das leben süß‘ or work makes life sweet,” says Havig. “It’s not that beer makes life sweet or partying makes life sweet or fun. It’s work. Work is what makes life sweet, right? You should work, and at the end of your day, you should feel like you fucking did something and that it mattered. That’s brewing to me. That is 100% brewing to me.”
